As the first of many phases for the brand in India, the project had a strategic role in setting design standards and building trust between UK and India-based stakeholders. The design needed to balance JLR’s global guidelines with the practical requirements and cultural context of a rapidly scaling local team.

The project became a case study in applying research-led design to enhance wellbeing and performance in challenging architectural conditions.

Following the rapid success of JLR’s first and second phases in Bangalore, the 5th floor was developed to accommodate an even larger workforce and increasing technical demands. The brief included open-plan desks, formal and informal meeting rooms, collaboration zones, storage, a boardroom, and a cafeteria designed to serve 250 employees across three sittings per meal.

Crux Design Studio was appointed to design Iress’s new Cape Town office, delivering a Stage 3 design and FF&E package from the UK. Working closely with Iress’s UK-based project manager, Crux ensured rigorous oversight and regular design reviews. The project was then handed over to an exceptional women-led local contractor to deliver through handover.

Earmarked initially as a car workshop, the 9,500 sq ft space was reassigned for a new and rapidly expanding lab function once it became clear that vehicle access constraints would limit its feasibility for workshop use. With JLR’s Bangalore engineering team scaling faster than anticipated, the brief changed in real time. On an accelerated timeline, Crux was tasked with adapting to the evolving requirements of newly formed teams and translating complex engineering needs into spatial and environmental solutions.

After initially planning to convert a different part of the building into a workshop, only to reallocate it for labs due to access constraints, JLR secured a new space better suited to vehicle movement and operational flow. While the new area resolved many logistical issues around entry and turning, it introduced fresh challenges, particularly around ceiling height, which restricted some of the more ambitious activities engineers hoped to undertake within the space.
